James Aren Duckett, the only police officer on patrol that night, approached her in the parking lot, and witnesses saw her enter his squad car. The next morning, her body was found in Knight Lake, less than a mile away, showing signs of sexual battery, strangulation, and drowning. Evidence linked Duckett to the crime, including tire tracks from his patrol car at the scene and her palm prints on his cruiser. Duckett, a former Mascotte police officer, was convicted in 1988 for her rape and murder and has spent over 37 years on death row.
